Indonesia Labour Ministry Urges Stronger Industrial Hygiene to Reduce Workplace Risks

JAKARTA, PASUNDAN POS — Indonesia’s Labour Ministry is urging employers and workers to strengthen industrial hygiene practices to identify and control workplace hazards as part of efforts to improve occupational safety and health.
Deputy Labour Minister Afriansyah Noor said workers’ health and skills were closely linked to their capacity to work and overall productivity.
“Without proper industrial hygiene, the potential productivity of our young workforce will not be fully achieved,” Afriansyah said at the International Workshop on Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health in Jakarta on Thursday (Sept. 24).
He said workplace conditions needed to be monitored to identify factors that could affect workers’ health. Greater awareness of occupational safety and health (OSH) was also needed to make safety practices part of workplace culture, he said.
Afriansyah cited data from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan showing 319,224 workplace accidents in 2025, down from 462,241 cases in 2024.
He also said the fatality figure presented at the event fell to 9,834 in 2025 from 49,170 in 2024.
The Labour Ministry would continue implementing OSH programmes to reduce workplace risks and promote safer and healthier working environments, Afriansyah said.
He added that effective implementation of occupational safety measures required the involvement of both employers and workers, including in identifying and controlling potential hazards in the workplace. (Robert Paiman)
